Okay, it's tomorrow, but I'm making turkey with all the trimmings today! (That way I can truly rest on my day off tomorrow before I go back to work on Tuesday.)

Here is some info about Canadian Thanksgiving. (I truly wish that it would coincide with the holiday in the USA, which falls next month. It would make things easier in so many ways.)

Typical scenery here at this time of year...except that this past week we have been enjoying summer weather. It doesn't really feel like Fall yet, although some of the trees have changed colour.

And this is how I plan to set my table today. LOL. Except that my wine glasses are aqua in color, not yellow. I do have an orange tablecloth, but I don't have orange cloth napkins, so I'm going to use paper ones with leaves on them (if I can find where I put them last year). I have some nice candles also, but if you think I'm going to put together a centerpiece like that, you are crazy! I have a dish fetish and own several different sets of dinnerware, two of them brown. I'll decide later which set to use for today. As for the food, I am serving turkey breast only, which I bought already sliced off the roast - two of them because we are having 6, possibly 8, people for dinner. I'll make gravy and stuffing from scratch, and open a can of jellied cranberry sauce. For vegetables, I bought a purple cauliflower which I plan to serve with cheese, and some yams which I will do in a casserole combined with white potatoes. For dessert I bought a New York style cheesecake, plain, and I am going to make a fruit sauce from frozen mixed berries that I bought, to pour on top of it. I have lovely red wine from Chile and some Colombian coffee so I'm all set! Yeah, Mama!

Hmm... I think, it's such a nice thing to celebrate. I wish, the people here would have picked up on Thanksgiving instead of Halloween (or however it's spelled)...

Please post a picture of your set table. I'm curious. The one on the picture looks really stunning. My mum also has a pot like the pumpkin ones on the photo. But it's bigger, not just for one person. LOL

Yeah, you spelled it right!

I'll take some pics of the table! Having the dish fetish that I do, I was salivating over the ceramic pumpkins in that photo!!! I don't have anything like that, though. :(

aw it's lovely. isn't it funny how there's really a need for a holiday around this time? in the ussr times there used to be teh october revolution day... now it's obviously cancelled but there's a new totally random one, just because otherwise the nearest proper holiday would be new year :D (our christmas is january 7th)

Yeah, I know it's because it's harvest time and this holiday is based on the old pilgrim holiday with the onset of autumn.

Do you follow the same holiday dates as the Greek Orthodox religion? I have a Ukrainian girlfriend who is of the Greek Orthodox faith. :)

we call ourselves just orthodox, but yes we kinda belong together with the greek orthodox. so does serbia btw:) and with the calendar it's about oooh gregorian? vs argh my brain doesn't work. lol.

yeah i'm only talking of this from the practical point of view hehe... that new "historical" holiday isn't actually celebrated, people just enjoy a day off lol.

Happy Thanksgiving, Jenni!

It's so interesting to read this post, as thanksgiving is something we don't celebrate here at all. As I said to Shana, I sort of wish that we had adopted this tradition instead of Halloween here - it seems like such a beautiful holiday.

Thanks! The original pilgrims that came from England, France, and other European countries who settled in North America established the holiday as a way to give thanks for the bounty at harvest time here. It is a beautiful time of year, with all the great food and the fall colours. )
