Serg is too crazy! Here are pics of him from the game and after at the celebrations.
Here he is challenging Podolski.

And Lahm.

Pouring water on himself is a prerequisite.

I think he's screaming because Jens Lehmann saved his header.

But here he's celebrating.

Walking with Santi Cazorla after.

LOL @ how he's holding onto Iker!!! O_O

Laughing at Xavi who is looking at himself in the trophy's reflection. LOL.

Hanging onto trophy. LOL. I noticed on the TV coverage of the celebrations that Serg didn't seem to want to let go of it! He didn't for a long time!

Serg looks at trophy.

And Serg kisses trophy.

Do you / does anyone know what his tee-shirt meant? Whose picture is that?

Date: 2008-06-30 11:21 am (UTC)After a shaky start, not playing particularly well in the first two games, Sergio came roaring back into style for the next three. He even picked up Man of the Match for the game v. Russia.
The picture on the t-shirt is of Antonio Puerta, a teammate of Sergio's from Sevilla, and a close friend. Antonio was still playing with Sevilla last year when he suffered a heart attack on the pitch during the first game of the season (I believe it was on Aug. 26/07.) He never regained consciousness and died Aug. 29th, I believe, or it may have been the 28th. He was only 22 and it was discovered post-mortem that he had a heart defect that was never discovered. I was watching the game when it happened and was profoundly moved. I was leaving for Spain & Portugal on Sept. 2nd, and when we arrived in Sevilla, we went to visit the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan stadium where I added my tribute to Puerta along with thousands of others written on the outside wall of the stadium. Unfortunately I couldn't see a game because at the time we were there everyone was off on international duty and the Spanish NT was up north in Oviedo training for their next qualifier for the Euros.
Anyway, I digress. I wasn't surprised to see Sergio wearing that t-shirt, since he knew Antonio so well, and there was a good chance that he would have played for the NT if he hadn't passed away so tragically.:(

Date: 2008-06-30 04:07 pm (UTC)I don't think I'm particularly morbid, but I have wondered what it would be like to see a player get severely injured. Each time they crack their heads against each other, for example, I really hold my breath... I can understand that it was a really moving for you to have seen the game where it happened.
Thanks for sharing... *hugs*

No, I don't think you are. I think there is some compelling sense of curiosity that makes us want to see tragic things. My husband and I were also watching the Arsenal-Birmingham City game in which Eduardo of Arsenal had his foot ripped off in a freak tackle by a Birmingham defender. They refused to show it in replays on TV, saying it would be 'too upsetting' to see. So I got online as soon as I could to see if there was any footage of it, and of course there was. It was terribly shocking to see how his foot was broken right away from his ankle bones, but it thankfully was still contained within his sock and because the sock was red, you couldn't see any blood, thank goodness. I think that because this kind of thing is so unusual also, it attracts us.
I love your trophy-kissing icon! LOL.
