BILBAO 2 - SHOPS, SAN MAMES TOUR

Here are some more photos from my trip to Bilbao. In these ones you can see some of the small shops in back of the hotel and some places of interest, as well as our tour of San Mames Stadium.
This is near San Mames. It was a very windy day.

This is the main library in Bilbao.

Berton, a bar with great pintxos.

This little shop is called 'La Matilda' and I suppose this is Matilda out front.

This is the Athletic Club shop in Casco Viejo. (But not the official shop.)

And here is me posing in the doorway of the Athletic shop.

This is the entrance to the lift that goes to the top of the hill!

Some interesting shop windows.

Ohhh....the Ribera Market.
xurda87 told me some fascinating facts about this place, which is currently under renovation.

This is the Basque Museum from the front.

And a carousel.

xurda87 probably knows what these places are...sadly, I've forgotten. :(

That's a Bilbobus!

The Ribera Market again!

This is inside the mall.

Christmas decorations.

The stairs again!

And inside the train station, this is where you catch the train to Lezama!

We went and took a tour of the San Mames stadium. This is a wall inside when you first walk in.

Here is the lion!

The press room!

The way to the dressing rooms...this one is for the referees.

These are the steps the players walk down to the pitch! They are separated by those red dividers to keep the two opposing teams apart!

The pitch!

The arch.

This is where the coaches sit! These seats are soooooo comfortable!

And views from outside San Mames.

Date: 2010-12-19 10:16 pm (UTC)This was a street right behind my hotel
Not exactly... This is a street near San Mamés. See those containers at the back? Remember the extremely windy day and one of them ending almost in the middle of the road and a man trying to put it bak in place? And see the shop on the left side of the street after the closed metal shutters? We took some pictures of the shop, you've posted them here.
I think this was the Arriaga Theatre that had the Tourist Office next door
Close. This is the door to the main library in Bilbao. It's only a few meters from the Arriaga Theatre and the tourist office.
A shop called 'Berton'
I'll say it's more a bar than a shop (a bar with great pintxos, btw) ;)
This is the Athletic Club shop in Casco Viejo
That's not the official shop, really. Although I'm sure they sell some Athletic stuff there. That's a bar where Athletic fans gather.
These shops looked closed. I guess it was rather late at night.
That's the entrance to the lift!! See the sign above the doorway? It says "Ascensor Igogailua". Igogailua means lift in Basque :P
I'll just end the comment here and continue on another one so that it doesn't look that long...

Date: 2010-12-19 10:42 pm (UTC)Let's see...
1.- That's the townhall
2.- Hotel Carlton in Plaza Moyua
3.- Entrance to the Santiago Cathedral
4.- Tiny square in front of the cathedral
5.- Part of Parque Casilda Iturrizar (commonly known as Parque de Doña Casilda or Parque de los patos)
6.- Palacio Euskalduna (Euskalduna Conference Centre and Concert Hall)
7.- Puente de Deusto (and University of Deusto "hidden" behind it)
8.- Stairs and lift to go up/down Puente de Deusto (and some palm trees :D)
9.- Museo de Bellas Artes. We were there! But the entrance was at the back...
And I know this is the Zubiarte Mall where we ate dinner
That's the Ribera Market! The renewed part that is.
This is outside the Casco Viejo train station
Close once again, but not entirely true :P
How to explain where this is...? I know! You were probably in front of the Kukuxumusu shop!
This is where the coaches sit!
I know that girl sitting there and I can assure that's not the coach!! xDDD
Sooo... this is it! Sorry for the novel like comments...

Date: 2010-12-20 12:31 am (UTC)Hahahaha. I think the girl sitting in the coach's seat would make a good coach also! Or maybe a trainer? What do you think? XDDD
Your novel-like comments were much appreciated! *HUGS*

Date: 2010-12-20 12:41 am (UTC)For me it looks like there wouldn't be much car traffic... or on your pics are always the places for 'going by your own feet' ;)
San Mames looks GREAT!
Thanks again for sharing your photos!

Date: 2010-12-20 12:48 am (UTC)Yeahhhh...there wasn't much traffic at all in this part of the city! I know there are main roads like the one to the airport where there is more traffic but still not that much!
Walking in Bilbao was great. There are many places to go and even to take the bus or metro part way as long as you can walk as well is a good way to get around. When you walk you can see much more, as you know. :)
You're very welcome! *HUGS*

Date: 2010-12-20 05:28 pm (UTC)And I know where all this is! *bounces* I almost didn't recognise the street in the first pic because when we were there, one of the bars on the left side had tables and chairs outside. XD (By the way, did you check out those bars? One of them has four gorgeous, huge photos of Athletic on their walls!)
Did you visit the Berton bar? (Not sure if I've asked already.) We watched Spain play against Liechtenstein there and because I was so engrossed in the match, my buddy had to get us drinks all the time, and at some point I kept joking that he was enjoying this because that way he could chat up the barkeeper (whose name was Rafa *LOL*). XD
OMG, MAJOR FACEPALM MOMENT: I totally did NOT see the Athletic fanshop you took a picture of! O__O There is an Athletic fanshop in the Casco Viejo, but it looks nothing like this! WTF!!! Next time I visit Bilbao, I have to go look for this one!
Oooh, those Athletic figures in front of that ship look awesome! I want! :D
The market must really be something! A bus driver told us lots of stuff about it (but unfortunately I only understood half of it) and when he was finished giving us information we were almost pouting because the market was closed. ;)
The city hall! OMG, your photo looks a lot better than the one I took at night. You must have a great camera! :) (Did you recognise the place from the pictures of Athletic celebrating the Copa del Rey final last year?)
LMAO, the Bilbobus! Isn't it just brilliant? XDDD
We didn't go to the Zubiarte mall either, so that one's definitely on my list for my next visit! And I love how they decorated the streets with all that glowing stuff!
I wish we'd known that you can go to Lezama by train! That sounds really comfortable, and also it's rather impossible to get lost. XD How long did it take you to get there?
AH, SAN MAMÉS. HOW I MISS YOU.
OMG, did they actually remove the huge poster of Fernando Llorente? Because if I'm not entirely mistaken, it used to cover the Athletic sign in that last picture. Shame! I'm sure you would have loved seeing that poster!!
Thanks for sharing those great pics, and I must admit I squeed when I spotted you and Iratxe in some of them! :D You look like you were having a lot of fun, and that's so good to know! :)

Date: 2010-12-21 12:10 am (UTC)Iratxe and I tried to go to several bars but they were too packed! It was a holiday weekend and the place was hopping. Eventually we did get to a bar in La Plaza Nueva, which incidentally, I loved and went for a walk in every day!
I can't remember if the Berton was the one we went in on the way back from the San Mames tour. We did wait in one for about 20 minutes and then left because it was too full and no one was leaving! :(
Next time I go to Bilbao I am hoping the Ribera market renovations will be finished...I really wanted to go in!
There were two Athletic fanshops but don't ask me where each of them was! XDD All I know is one of them was somewhere behind the hotel.
OMG I bought a new camera for this trip. It has a zoom lens (which I haven't tried out yet). I bought it for taking sports photos, like the next time I go to a match! I am very happy with the quality of the pics I got from it!
OMG the Bilbobus! I bought myself a wall clock that has the bus on the front! It's so cute. :)
OMG! The train to Lezama is so EASY!!! Iratxe told me to get off at the stop before Lezama, which is actually closer to the training ground. (I forget what it is called.) And at one point the train starts to go backwards but you are not to worry because it just switches to another track and gets you to your destination just fine! It takes about a half-hour to get there from the Casco Viejo station. And the views were amazing. :)
Oh god, YES!!! They took down Llorente's poster from the front of the San Mames! How dare they! But it rained a lot when I was there and maybe it got ruined. :(
Hahahaha! Yes, I do believe both Iratxe and me had a blast in Bilbao!!!! I miss it and her so much! :(
BUT I WILL GO BACK!!!!!!!!! :)

Date: 2011-01-05 05:42 am (UTC)Those night pictures are really neat with the lighting.
And the cathedral looks so pretty!
I had no idea referees had their own dressing room. It makes sense, I just had never stopped to think about it!

Date: 2011-01-06 11:57 pm (UTC)Yes...hahahaha! I had to take a photo of the refs' dressing room because I never realized they had one either! (What were we thinking...that they changed in the toilets?) :)
