River Plate fans' calling card turns things ugly for Ogre

Saturday October 17 2009

WITH all the madness currently surrounding Argentina's attempt to reach the World Cup, it's easy to forget how crazy things are in the nitty gritty of the country's leagues.

Take the players of River Plate for instance. After last Monday's 3-1 'clasico' defeat to Independiente, certain team members were bombarded with phone calls from so-called fans who wanted to give their 'heroes' a piece of their mind.

While the players were spooked enough by the fact that fans had their phone numbers, things took a more sinister development when they had to listen to comments such as "we know what time your wife goes shopping" and "we know your family's movements".

The players cancelled their mobile phone contracts and refused all media interview requests as the suspicion grew that journalists had passed on their phone numbers. An investigation is now underway.

However, River striker Cristian 'Ogre' Fabbiani is unlikely to have been flavour of the month with his team-mates. While he was being substituted against Independiente, he was spotted putting a finger over his lips in attempt to quieten the barracking he was getting from the home supporters.

We doubt that he's feeling quite so brave now.

River Plate midfielder Rodrigo Archubi suspended after testing positive

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS (CP) – 12 hours ago

River Plate midfielder Rodrigo Archubi has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for a banned substance, the Argentine Football Association said in a statement Friday.

The AFA said Archubi's urine sample tested positive on Sept. 27.

AFA spokesman Roberto Garaycochea said Archubi was provisionally suspended and was to testify Tuesday before an AFA panel. He said the AFA would not give information about the substance until the case was resolved.

He said that would take four to five weeks, with the B sample still to be tested.

Garaycochea said any eventual ban would depend on the substance and circumstances in the case.

"We're going to support him as a human being so he can deal with this and get past it," River Plate coach Leonardo Astrada said.

The best part is, Archubi is so horrible that River fans are actually glad he won't play for 6 months.
Those phone calls are ridiculous. ESPECIALLY calling Buonanotte, who seems to be the only living player they have. How about calling Aguilar, the president THEY voted? mm?

LOL. Bullies always seem to pick on the weakest, not the strongest, I guess! (Not that I mean to call Buonanotte weak, just that it is more cowardly to pick on him - a young, small-stature player - rather than a rich executive who probably has bodyguards!)

But seriously, there is so much work to do at the team it would be much more constructive if the fans could get behind them and make some useful suggestions.
