The biggest game in the country! The latest edition took place on Sunday, November 20th at the Gran Parque Central in Montevideo (Nacional's home game).

The match did not let the fans down. For the first 15 minutes Penarol looked the strongest, but Nacional came roaring back. I actually thought this was destined to be a tie, but for a piece of bad luck right at the end for Penarol, when a player (I forget who now) was deemed to have handled a ball in the box (I don't think he knew much about it) and Nacional was awarded a penalty. Veteran Alvaro Recoba, who had been subbed on late in the game, converted a penalty to give Nacional the 2-1 win.

A photo of the Nacional end of the stadium.

OMG, these two had a 'moment'! Rodrigo actually pulled up Santiago's shirt, exposing his torso. I WISH there was a pic of it! O_O It was hot...there was a flash of anger from Santiago, then Rodrigo reacted in anger, pulled up Santiago's shirt, then Santiago appeared to apologize and the two made up. (*makes mental note for possible future fic)

"Cacique" (Alexander Medina) got kicked in the forehead by his own player and went down and out. I thought they'd lose him for sure, but he wouldn't go off. He got off the cart and immediately fell flat on his face on the pitch. They carted him off, only to have him insist on coming back on a few minutes later with a bandage around his head. Uruguayans are tough. (More on that later.)

The other Nacional goal was scored by 18-year-old Gonzalo Bueno, who is now a Nacional hero. Here are a few post-match pics of Gonzalo.

I don't know if this is his father and little brother. (I hope it's not his son!)

More on Uruguayan toughness:

Jose Luis Tancredi is a talented Uruguayan midfielder playing for Millonarios in Bogota, Colombia. In his last match vs America de Cali, he suffered a horrific tibial-fibial leg break. While most players would have passed out from this type of injury, the brave Uruguayan remained conscious through the whole thing, even to the point of posing for a 'thumbs up' smiling pic from his hospital bed right away. Pics are below, including his Xray, which clearly shows the breaks in both bones. He is expected to be out for about 4 months.

Thanks to this match, I really got to 'know' some of the Penarol players. The team sure differs a lot from the one that played in last year's Copa Libertadores. :)

Thank you for the extra pics! It's nice to have some from Penarol's POV...I got most of mine from the Nacional site, and some from Ovacion.

It was a great match between two great teams. :)

Incidentally, I loved how Marcelo was dressed. The shirt had a red trim around the back of the collar that matched the necklace he was wearing. LOVED the necklace...it suited him so well. XD
