UNDER-20 WORLD CUP: INTO THE KNOCK-OUTS
Aug. 10th, 2011 03:48 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
I've been having internet problems for the past couple of weeks now, where my connection keeps going on and off randomly. Sometimes I can only get online for a few minutes at a time. I have to go to work on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays as well as take care of other stuff at home, so it really wasn't leaving me much time at all to get my online stuff done. Today we went and replaced the modem. I suspected it was the problem, since while we were moving the computer upstairs a month ago or so, Eddie dropped the modem on the floor. Something might have come loose inside and caused it to malfunction the way it was doing. At least I hope that was the problem. We will see. Another thing he thought he might have done was to accidentally staple the cable wrongly when he was moving it up the wall to bring it upstairs from where it was in the basement. However, we moved the cable a long time ago and everything was working fine until more recently. Even if the modem was damaged a month ago, it could have started malfunctioning awhile after it was dropped.
So I've still been watching the Under-20 World Cup, which has now entered the knockout stage. Last night were matches between Argentina and Egypt, Portugal and Guatemala, Mexico and Cameroon, and MY TEAM, the host team COLOMBIA vs Costa Rica. My heart is not going to stand too many more games like the Colombian/Costa Rica one or the Mexican/Cameroon match! The former went back and forth all game until finally Colombia prevailed by a score of 3-2! And the Mexican/Cameroon match went to penalties, where Mexico defeated Cameroon by 3 penalties to 0. Thank god...Mexico is my second-favourite team. But of course, they will meet Colombia in the next round! :(
Here are a few photos from each game. Not a large picspam because I just don't have the time atm.
James Rodriguez of Colombia vs Pablo Martinez of Costa Rica

More from Colombia vs Costa Rica
I really like Costa Rica (nickname 'The Ticos'). But WHY did they have to do such an uninspiring job in the group stage, then turn it on full blast for this one? I love to see them playing so well, but NOT AGAINST MY CAFETEROS! OKAY?
The referee for this match was Mark Clattenburg of England. Yes, I can hear you all laughing. But this time, he actually did a very, very good job. He even got the penalty right. And these two teams never play dirty anyway. They are two of the nicest teams in the tournament.

John Jairo Ruiz of Costa Rica

Luis Muriel scored

Jordan Smith of Costa Rica

Pedro Franco scored for Colombia

Santiago Arias (right back) was awesome

Costa Rica played really, really, really well.

I hate to see them looking so dejected. They could have won. They really could have done it.

But my bbs won. Sweet baby James won the match with a penalty kick.

Okay, now the Argentina/Egypt match was naughty! One of the Argentine players, #20 Carlos Luque, took FOUR dives in the penalty area, and fooled the referee on two of them! It was NOT fair, yet I still believe Argentina was the better team and deserved to win the match. Erik Lamela converted the two penalties and Argentina won 2-1, after Egypt was also awarded a penalty. It was quite a nasty game...I could only watch the first half, and during the second I read a magazine and kept my ears open for the score.

Mexico vs Cameroon.
Alan Pulido

Little Carlos Orrantia scored.

Erick Torres, another great Mexican player.

And Ulises Davila.

Jose Rodriguez, who stopped a penalty!

And the heartbreaker. I was so sad for the Guatemalans. They were the surprise team to get into the knockout rounds, but they gave Portugal a very good match, and the score was only 1-0. This was a historical World Cup for the Guatemalans, because their country has never made it to any World Cup before, let alone to the knockout rounds.
They are one of the cutest teams in the tournament. I'm going to miss them. :(
Elias Vasquez is arguably their best player.

This little Portuguese guy is Caetano.

Somebody got really pissed at the Portuguese goalkeeper.
