What a night! Let me start from the beginning.

First, I decided to wear my Mexico national team shirt from the winter...it has long sleeves and is nice & warm. You never know what the weather is going to be like down at BMO Field even in summer. Jamie and I got to the train in the nick of time. We had to RUN like mad downstairs, through the tunnel and up another flight of stairs to get on board JUST IN TIME!!! While I was still catching my breath, a guy wearing a Toronto shirt across the aisle from where we sat down hollered to me, "Hey! You don't LOOK Mexican!" He was smiling and laughing and was sitting with a very cute Mexican-looking boy and a blonde girl. He was obviously joking so I replied that I wasn't Mexican but I liked the Mexican NT a lot and supported them in the WC. Once we got to the stadium there were many more Mexican fans although not a lot in comparison to the number of Toronto fans, but several guys came up to me and yelled "Vamos Cruz Azul!" and punched me in the shoulder, etc. That was fun.

Jamie and I were just finding our seats after buying some Red Bulls at one of the concession stands when we heard an almighty roar go up. I looked at the big screen and saw that Martin Saric had just scored, at 2 minutes and something into the match! We missed it! *headdesk* But we took our seats...not bad...18 rows from the front, and got into the game. A few minutes went by and a very pretty Mexican girl came over and took a seat right in front of me on the end of the row. She was staring at me when she came over so I figured she must have noticed my shirt. (We were surrounded by fans in Toronto shirts...nobody else in a Mexican shirt in our section except me.) The guy next to her told her that someone else was sitting there so she had to move over a few seats to my right where there was an empty seat. She told us in pretty good English that she was sitting over with the Cruz Azul Ultras but they drove her crazy...she actually said "Ai ai ai" and waved her hands around her face. LOL. So all the men sitting around us said, "Oh, that's alright, you can sit here, no problem." LOL. Anyway, I'm only mentioning her because she looked like a WAG. I was so sure she was. She had beautiful hair, very long, she was wearing stylish clothing, and she had those ripped jeans that seem to be popular again with a light beige jacket. She was carrying a black quilted leather handbag with a gold chain shoulder strap. She also had an i-phone in a green case and was carrying a huge bag of popcorn, which I only saw her eat about ten kernels out of. LOL. It was still full by the end of the match. The fact she was all alone and had come from the traveling supporters' section made me think she must have been a WAG. That and the fact she was very pretty and so well-dressed.

Okay, so on to my match impressions. I was shocked to see that Cruz Azul did NOT put their best team out there! Specifically there was NO Joel Huiqui (their biggest and best defender) and NO Rogelio Chavez (their awesome right back who is a good scorer as well). Gerardo Torrado of the Mexico NT did not start. Neither did Chaco Gimenez, the Argentine playmaker. Jose Corona, one of the GKs from the NT, also sat on the bench! Yosgart Gutierrez played his FIRST game in goal this season in this match. It just didn't make any sense to me. The fact that both Martin Saric and Miguel Mista (or Mister Mista as Toronto fans call him) scored their FIRST goals for TFC was just bizarre.

I saw Joel on the sub bench and couldn't help but sneak peeks at him all game long. We were sitting right above the Toronto bench at midfield and the Cruz Azul bench was to the left of the TFC bench, so he wasn't that far away. When he and the other subs got up to run around I took pics. When they went to stand and watch the game in front of the Ultras I took pics. When the players came back out after the half-time break Joel walked by himself to the sub bench, sat down all alone and hugged his knees. It was such an adorable gesture. I tried to take a pic but he leaned over and some of the other guys had walked right between me and him so it ruined my view. That kept happening too. After the match was over Joel and the subs walked to the center circle to hand around and talk and exchange shirts with some of the Toronto players. I tried to get a good pic of Joel but he beckoned to one of the trainers who brought over a cooler and got in front of Joel so I couldn't see him. Then Joel bent down to get a bottle of water. And he bent down at least four times to tie his boots seemingly every time I wanted to take a photo. LOL. He seems like the kind of guy who can never keep still! Other observations: Cesar Villaluz is a shortish guy (not as short as Maxi Biancucchi but I don't think anyone is that short...LOL) and has a HUGE HEAD. He's built like a tank too. He's so WIDE. And Maxi is really HOT but really short! And also built very stocky and compact. The hottest players on Cruz Azul: Maxi Biancucchi. Fausto Pinto...god, is he HOT in person! Horacio Cervantes...BIG guy with a HOT body and great hair! Chaco Gimenez is also hot in person. But the HOTTEST (apart from Joel of course) is Javier Orozco! He got subbed on late in the game. Holy god, is he good-looking! He has a really sexy body and fantastic hair!

Towards the end there was a fight between Dwayne DeRosario (TFC's best player) and Fausto Pinto. DeeRo objected to the way Fausto tried to protect the ball in the corner and kicked him or something. At which point Gerardo Torrado ran over, grabbed DeeRo around the throat and shoved him. The linesman was right there and as a result both players got yellow-carded. LOL. All the Cruz Azul players came running over and Yosgart the GK pointed at DeeRo so the ref would know it was him who fouled Fausto. Hahahaha. After that the fans booed Yosgart loudly every time he touched the ball. You DON'T mess with DeeRo in front of the Toronto fans! XD

After the match we went to get the train home but realized we missed it. The next one wouldn't be coming for 45 minutes so we went to get an ice cream to kill time. When we got on the train again we were sitting opposite three Toronto fans wearing TFC shirts. They were all drunk, all young guys. One of them spotted me in my Mexican shirt and started screaming, "CRUZ AZUL SUCKS! CRUZ AZUL SUCKS! CRUZ AZUL SUCKS!" over and over again. Can I tell you how annoying that is when it's late and you're tired? I just *facepalmed* and luckily he got off at the next stop. We had to change cars anyway because we realized we were at the wrong end of the train for getting off.

Once home I was way too hyper to go to sleep right away. I noticed they were showing the match on TV at 1:30 AM so I stayed up and started watching it but fell asleep soon after. Today I am truly knackered and don't know what the hell I am doing. But I photoshopped some of my pics and I'll post them along with some I saved off various sites along with a vid off Youtube of the three goals. It's a good vid. Martin Saric does the most hilarious dance! XD

Cruz Azul played horribly for the first 70 minutes of the match. Chaco Gimenez got subbed on at half-time and Gerardo Torrado sometime later. They tried to get things going but it was too little, too late. Chaco scored off a free kick. It was really nice, but they couldn't score from open play. The Toronto guys were very physical and kept cutting out passes and gaining possession of the ball back off the Mexicans.

Okay, here's the vid:

And MY pics. LOL. I cropped some of them and tried to sharpen them up but they're not perfect by any means!

These are all my JOEL ones. (Joel is the darkish guy with longish hair and the TALLEST one.)

God I miss going to games sooooooooo much!! I miss the view, the crazy fans and of course the football!!

I was so excited last night when Saric scored and then again when Mista scored!!! I thought TFC played the best football they ever played during the first half, very attacking! Winning their first ever CL Group Stage game is super exciting! We will prob get killed in Mexico though, TFC suck on the road :(

LOL. The fans sure are crazy! XD

I don't know what the problem is on the road for TFC. Although I think it's not unusual in the MLS because of the distances teams have to travel, so unlike in Europe. :(

I remember when Seattle Sounders came here. I was so looking forward to a good game but the Sounders sucked and it was an easy win for TFC.

First thanks so much for your report! I'm happy for you!

Yosgart is almost always playing the Copa matched and he played the two matches against San Francisco too! He did NOT play his first match this season!!! I think it was okay to let play NOT all the first team players. They have a lot matches and the coach has to restsome players a bit. Javier Orozco isn't always playing from the start he is somehow like a 'joker'. Still they played like they would be sleeping... I hope they can kick the Toronto arses at home. It's your team but I don't like it. I remember them with Pablo Piatti and there they played another style... maybe they have now another coach or some players are a bit 'strange' for me (#14 - I always wanted to yell at him, he is the greates diver and was always complaining)

*is still pissed*

I got a very good stream it was like watching TV! *smiles*

BIG *LOL* @ you and coming too late... that shouldn't happen. I was always early in the stadium and could watch all the warm up and Ceren took there lots of pics.

You have there some stupid fans like we have. I will never get it!

Thank you!!!

Re: Yosgart. Okay, that's what I get for listening to the TFC announcers and not checking! Of course Yosgart has played this season. I remember it now but last night I could NOT think!!!

When Toronto go to Mexico it will be very different. Toronto is NOT a travelling team!

Last year I loved the team with Pablo Vitti (Pablo Piatti is with Almeria-XD) and there was another guy I liked a lot...a defender. Sam Cronin. But they got a new coach (and I LOVED the old coach) and the new one is much more hardcore. Sure, the team is winning and the fans are happy and I guess that's what counts most. :(

LOL @ #14. DeRosario is like GOD here. He is one of the best players in the MLS and sometimes I think he thinks he is too. He used to be more humble! :(

YEAAAAHHHH for good streams like TV! I LOVE those ones!!! :)

We were late because of Jamie's work. Although we would NOT have missed the opening if we had not goofed around going to the washroom, going the LONG way to our seats and stopping to look at the Mexican food stands. (They had some yummy-looking stuff but we weren't hungry.) AND we lined up to get Red Bulls! We wasted 10 or 15 minutes pissing around when we could have been in our seats! :(

Sorry for mixing the Pablos ;) Pablo VITTI now with Universidad San Martín de Porros and still playing Copa Sudamericana!!!

I hope Toronto will NOT be a travelling team out of the blue!

Hardcore is the right word... that's very sad. #14 is really NOT my typ of a football player.

That's shit if you have to work that long on a football day :( Our matches were always late and Ceren and me had much time for going there. I never look for something to eat or to drink. I don't need it and I'll NOT pay the horror prices there. The only thing what we rented were pillows for our arses because it was toooooooooooooooooooo cold!

I have found some pics of the match :) and the very nice hotel where the guys slept a bit too long ;)

It's so shitty you wasn't there to look for them....

I really hate it to live in that 'football-less' city!!! I would give something for watching the guys I love!!! Ask them for an autograph like I did it when Liverpool was here. I was so sad Benfica and Sporting were here in the COLD winter time. It's NOT fun to stay and wait in front of a hotel and for the footballer it is also shit.... summer is much better because the guys have time for photos and autographs. I guess now I have to wait for a very long time for good football *is pissed*

It is so sad that there is no first division football there now! It hasn't been a good year for you, has it? :(

We live a long way from the stadium. By fast-speed train it takes an hour to get there and to drive it would be ridiculous...about a half-hour more I guess. So there is no way to work and then get to the match early unless Jamie had left early. But we didn't think it was necessary.

How do you find out where a team is staying? I found out LATER, after the match, that the boys had trained somewhere accessible...Cherry Beach...which is open to the public. It sucks that I didn't know that before. But it is no fun for me to do something all by myself. I would want friends with me to be fangirls with. I couldn't do it alone at my age. I really don't look like the part. LOL. I would be too shy to approach and ask a footballer for his autograph I think. When I was younger and prettier, no problem! But now? Hahahahaha!

I have to go to our 'Olympia Stadion' for more than an hour by feet, tram and train/metro. It's the other 'end' of the city *smiles*

For me it is very interesting to watch all the guys while warming up. It's also funny to watch them because they do a lot of funny stuff and sometimes I think they are doing it also for all the visitors! At this time you can take the best pictures *smiles*

I go always first to their official site! Sometimes they have there some infos. If not there I'm looking for news *smiles* My spanish is really shitty but THAT I understand!!!

Hallo! You and old??? *LOL* I'm NOT too old to do all that stuff. Why should I be shy to ask a player for an autograph? Carra - you know Carra on the pitch - is for sure one of the nicest guys ever! Do you think he is looking for girls? No! I guess a footballers knows very well who is a fan and who is only a stupid girl. Okay, NOT ALL know it *lol* Some are stupid.

I would go there alone too. I wouldn't miss it because of going alone there! Mostly there are some nice fans you can talk with!!!

Believe me I would have been waiting in front of the hotel for hours to get a photo and an autograph of JOEL and Maxi and some other guys!

I would not be able to do it alone. I am not good with crowds unless I have some support with me. Sometimes it might be possible, but not this time. Seeing the match was enough for me. It was very enjoyable and I will always remember it. :)

He was amazing. Clearly TFC's best player on the night. I can't believe we missed his goal live because we were pissing about!

Did you watch the vid? His celebration dance is priceless. XD

Oooohh, I need to make a Saric icon! :P

Yeah, it's so very sad. :(
I am glad that Martin is doing so well here though. At least it is something he can get absorbed in and hopefully get some pleasure out of. :)

Yes, definitely. I remember the last time they interviewed Martín (he was training at the club before going to Toronto) and he said he was glad he was doing well, playing, etc. It's been ten years already. I think he said he now tried to only remember the good times he had with Mirko and all. :)

I've lost people close to me and it's true the feelings of pain diminish over time. It's good to think back on the good memories. I am very glad that Martin is doing well and having a good time. :)

WTF, they didn't even field their best team? How strange! Isn't this, like, a Champions League game or something? *shakes head* Will there be a second leg, or does that mean Cruz Azul are out of the competition? (Or is this just the group stage? I'm confused. XD)

And WTF, Torrado should have gotten a red for that choke. The other players' faces and necks are OFF LIMITS for hands.

But I'm glad you had fun nevertheless! The Mexican fans sound like lots of fun! XD And boo @ that guy who shouted "Cruz Azul sucks" at the end. This is not classy behaviour at all.

Thanks for the great report and the pics! I don't know most of the guys but it makes me happy that you enjoyed watching them so much! :)

From: [identity profile] just-jenni.livejournal.com
It was the Group Stage. The very first game, actually. But still...I know the league is important as well, but maybe they underestimated Toronto and thought the team they fielded could have won.

Yeah, the choking shocked me! I don't know what was so bad that he had to do that! :(

LOL. It was a stupid drunk on the train! So many people should NOT drink if they can't handle it. But they do nevertheless. *sigh* I still had a very good time. XDDD
