DETAILS OF MY DAY, MONDAY DECEMBER 28, 2009
Woke up at 5:52 am, wearing pink & white striped flannel pyjamas. Took my time getting up, drank some water and swallowed some vitamins before shuffling my way into kitchen and putting coffee on. Maxwell House 100% Colombian roast was the choice of the day. While that was brewing I fed the cats and opened the window. Another grey day outside, about 26 degrees F.
I made myself some apple& cinnamon Cheerios which I had with the coffee, and afterwards two Mandarin oranges. While eating I decided to watch the first half-hour of Baz Luhrmann's 'Romeo & Juliet' on DVD.
Went upstairs for my shower after which I chose black pants, a grey & white top and a grey sweater to wear for work. I remembered to take a bottle of water with me because the office air is dry. Shrugging on my black wool coat and wrapping a huge purple scarf around my neck, I went outside to scrape the snow off my car windows while listening to Adam Lambert's 'For Your Entertainment' CD. I noticed that I had almost no gas while cruising down the street to the corner, where I made my first right turn.
"Damn!" I thought, noticing that it was 8:35 am and if I stopped for gas I'd be late for work. A couple more right turns and I was on the local highway through town and onto the next one. Between the two towns there is a rather isolated gas station, which is never too busy, so I decided to stop there to fill up. I paid at the pump with my debit card so I didn't have to waste any more time going into the store to pay at the counter.
While squeezing the gas into my tank I looked up at the sky and saw twelve Canada geese overhead, flying west. Thinking that I would try to be like Christopher, the autistic 15-year-old hero of 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time' and try to notice absolutely everything around me, I saw that a young man who came into the gas station after me and took the pump next to mine was driving an older grey compact car, probably a Pontiac, but I couldn't see it properly and I am no car expert. He was in a hurry, the way he slammed the gas nozzle around and he took only a few seconds to put his gas in, so he must have put in, like, only five dollars' worth. Then he ran into the store but he didn't come out. In the meantime, I looked around some more and noticed three pine trees, each about 6 feet tall planted in a row on the lawn beside the store, and a hedge of what looked like spirea bushes in a half-circle beside the trees. That was all the gas station had for decoration. Across the street was a huge empty field and farther along some farm buildings, including a barn and a silo. The house was painted a pinkish-beige colour.
Okay, by now my tank was full. I replaced the nozzle carefully, remembered to fasten my gas cap back on properly and close the little door. Then I remembered to take my debit card out of my coat pocket and put it back into my wallet so I wouldn't freak out at the grocery store later when I would need to pay for my shopping. Then I got back into my car and started it up, noticing that the guy who was in a hurry still had not come out of the store and his car was still parked there beside mine.
By the time I got to work I was about 5 minutes late but my boss came to talk to me about my mother and was all concerned and stuff. Then my coworker came to give me a hug. Nobody else was at work today, because a lot of people were still on Xmas vacation. So the other doctor and his two nurses were not there and we were all alone. But it wasn't busy at all.
At around 11:00 am I got really hungry, so I walked down the street to the Tim Horton's and got a chicken noodle soup to go, with a buttered, toasted bagel and two green teas, one for me and one for my colleague. I ate my food in the lunch room and didn't it give me some horrible heartburn later on. And gas.
My colleague left a bit early, at 12:45 pm. We were due to close at 1:00 pm for lunch, and weren't expecting any more patients until 2:00 pm, but wouldn't you know it, three people came in just after she left, two to have their blood taken and another woman to get photocopies of her son's bloodwork results from November and September this year. By the time I got the place closed up it was 1:05 pm and I had to go grocery shopping.
I walked to the supermarket across the way and really loaded up on groceries, doing a full week's worth of shopping. Then I loaded it into my car and realized I was going to be hungry because I hadn't had anything since the soup and bagel at 11:00. So I took an apple and a banana out of the car trunk and went into the video store below our office to buy an iced tea, which I took upstairs and drank while I ate my banana and apple. It was 1:55 pm.
While I was eating I could hear a man's voice calling, "Hello? Hello?" so I went out and there was a guy who had come into the empty office and was weighing himself on one of our scales. He looked and smelled like a bum, but he said he was a patient of the other doctor's and thought he had had an appointment for today, but once he realized they weren't here, he thought that either he or they had made some sort of mistake. He asked me to call him a cab. I resisted saying, "Okay, you're a cab," and called a taxi for him. Then I opened up the office properly for the afternoon.
My other coworker arrived shortly thereafter and I told her about my mother, then we exchanged some Xmas anecdotes, or rather, she told me hers, because I really didn't have any. :(
The afternoon was quiet like the morning and I did mostly filing and faxing, but I was knackered from the shopping and being on my feet all lunch-hour, and I couldn't wait to go home.
I left at 4 pm. It had started snowing and I drove home in almost blizzard-like conditions, getting home about 15 minutes late.
For dinner I made butter chicken (an Indian dish) after we unpacked the groceries, with rice and a huge salad of mixed greens, sliced green peppers, zucchini, grape tomatoes and bean sprouts, with sweet onion dressing, all of which I had bought earlier. I had bought an apple pie for dessert but the only one who had any of it was Sean.
Everyone told me about their day. Eddie bought a humidifier for the downstairs, where I mostly watch TV. I was somewhat concerned about Olivia. She told me she had vomited blood earlier in the day and had horrible heartburn all day after that. I told her to come see the doctor tomorrow and will keep it in mind that I might have to rush her to hospital later if it happens again. I am thinking it might have been a GI bleed, but I don't really know what it is.
Jamie only had to work a half-day today, and he's staying in tonight as far as I know.
I watched Sky Sports News on TV after supper, before I tidied up somewhat and put Sean to bed. Now I am really knackered. I noticed that 'An American in Paris' is on the TV now, so I am going to watch it. Goodnight, everybody!
