jenni_blog: (WC-SILVER BALL AND HEART)
I apologize for being way behind on my match picspams. It was great to be on holidays for the past two weeks so that I could watch all the WC matches so far, but on Tuesday I had to return to work and I've been doing double shifts. Therefore it's been impossible for me to post every day. Today is a national holiday here so it's the perfect time for me to catch up, and fortunately there is a break in World Cup action as well, which allows some breathing space before the quarter-final matches begin.

The Oranje defeated the Slovaks 2:1 in order to reach the quarter-finals.

There is usually at least one player per team that I miss once that team has gone out of the WC. Martin Skrtel, I'll miss you a lot. See you at Liverpool!

Brazil beat Chile 3:0 to reach the quarter-finals.

If there is any team I am going to miss like crazy it's Chile. It was sad to watch the game and know they had no chance without their Castrol Index-topping defenders Gary Medel and Waldo Ponce, who were both suspended for this final match.

And I have never seen such an example of caring from one team of another, as evident from these photos. The Brazilian players seemed to go out of their way to comfort the distraught Chilenos after the match. In particular, Arturo Vidal was beside himself with grief. I think everyone is going to miss this team of absolute firecrackers.

This just broke my heart. :(

A nil-nil draw in an epic defensive battle and the first game to go to penalties. With both teams exhibiting technical brilliance, Paraguay proved to be the winner, with a perfect set of penalty kicks. It was a historic night for Paraguay as it would have been for Japan also. The team had never reached the quarter-finals before.

The way both teams played through 120 minutes it looked like none of the players had had any sleep the night before.

This match was a hard-fought one but even though the scoreline was only 1 - 0, Spain looked better for most of the game, IMO. I like Portugal too, but at this stage the teams will start dropping away until only two remain.
