So I finally picked up on this show at the point where the Top Ten were decided. Last week, in other words. Armed with
Entertainment Weekly's list of the Remaining 12 from a few weeks ago and their odds on who are most likely to become the Idol, I decided to get to 'know' the singers, writing down my own comments and notes as I go along. This season has been criticized for being duller than most, but I have not watched the show since the year Taylor Hicks won. So I missed last year's famously flamboyant Adam Lambert, although I did buy his CD when it came out. (It's very good.)
OK, so the new judges are a revelation to me too. Ellen Degeneres is funny, and the new girl beside Simon is someone I'm not familiar with, but she makes some good points in some of her comments. One thing that bothers me, though, is that the judges seem to dwell too much on telling the singers to be either "different" and "change it up" or to be "more like themselves" until I think most of these poor kids are totally confused. I know I am.
Under the cut are my impressions of the singers based on last night's renditions of some Beatles tunes.
