Xavi Hernandez was named the best player of Euro2008. Cool and calm, poised and perfect, possessing one of the sweetest touches in football, Xavi deserves the award. He is so quiet and unprepossessing, Xavi was born in Barcelona, plays for Barcelona, and lives in Barcelona with his parents. Below is my picspam tribute to Xavi from the Euros, the most valuable player.

Yayz!!! David Villa has managed to hang on and win the Euro "Pichichi" award for scoring the most goals in the tournament, despite not being able to play in the final game!!! Good for you, David, sweetie! Here's a small picspam of David.

Let's face it: Spain is so deep with wonderful football players that some great ones didn't even make it onto the National Team (like Diego Capel and Jesus Navas for starters) and the ones who did should be proud even if they only got to play in one game. So this picspam is a tribute to all the wonderful subs that Spain has at the ready. These players of the Euros are: Ruben de la Red, Santi Cazorla, Xabi Alonso, Sergio Garcia, Andres Palop, Pepe Reina, Raul Albiol and Alvaro Arbeloa.

For interest's sake, the breakdown of players by club team is as follows:

Valencia - 4 players: David Villa, David Silva, Raul Albiol, Carlos Marchena.
Liverpool - 4 players: Fernando Torres, Pepe Reina, Alvaro Arbeloa, Xabi Alonso.
Villareal - 3 players: Santi Cazorla, Joan Capdevilla and Marcos Senna.
Real Madrid - 3 players: Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Ruben de la Red.
Barcelona - 3 players: Carles Puyol, Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta.
Sevilla - 2 players: Andres Palop, Fernando Navarro.
Arsenal, Mallorca, Almeria and Zaragoza have one player each.

Of interest, there is one relegated team with a national team player: Real Zaragoza, with Sergio Garcia representing. Sergio got to play against Greece, and he assisted on a goal, providing Dani Guiza with a great cross for his header. And it should have been Bojan Krkic playing in his place, but Bojan declined to play, citing fatigue. (But I've read the truth is that his mother doesn't want him to play for the National Team, being of fierce Catalan regional pride, and only wants him to play for the Catalan team.) I wonder if he and she regret that decision now that Spain has won the Euros? Anyway, I digress. Below is my picspam of Spain's beautiful, wonderful subs.

But before I post, here is one of my favourite pics from the finals. The WINNING GOAL.
