I decided to do a more in-depth list of the teams I like/dislike in the Euro 2012 competition and reasons why.

Like Best:

#1: Germany - Why? It's a nice team with a nice coach & players, it's exciting to watch, & plays strong & attractive football.

#2: Spain - See above reasons but with more Spanish flair than strength.

#3: England - I know most of the players from the EPL. I hate only one of them - John Terry - but love the Liverpool and Spurs players, as well as some others. Their GKs are favourites of mine. I don't expect them to advance to the semis, but it would be great if they could. :)

#4: Ireland - It's an interesting team, I like some of the players, but I don't know them all that well, so I might change my mind again.

Greece, Portugal, Sweden and Denmark all seem like nice teams to watch and have some players I like.

Not sure about:

The familiarity of players is very important to me. It's the first way I can identify with a national team. Therefore, while the next group seem like good teams, I don't know them very well except for the odd player here and there.

Russia, Croatia, Poland and the Ukraine.

Really don't care about/dislike:

The Netherlands, France, Czech Republic and Italy.

I hated what the Netherlands did to Argentina in 2006 and Spain in 2010. They played dirty and it was against two of my favourite teams at the time. (My son loves them and even bought their jersey, which irritates me no end. He better not come over today to watch the game.)

To segue a bit here, I loved the Argie teams of 2006 and the 2008 Olympic team. But the squad has been dickered around with too much since then, with tons of players being chosen, tried and then discarded. Not to mention too many coaching changes. This should never happen. National teams are different - they need to be consistent - a core group of players who, when they get old, should be replaced by younger players who have been consistently with the team, being used as subs, but given the opportunity to get to know and play with the team, and eventually fit in.

Argentina doesn't place enough value on defenders, as they did in the past when they had Roberto Ayala, Javier Zanetti and other great ones in their prime. They and Brazil were horrible in the 2011 Copa America, not befitting two teams who WERE counted among the world's best. Not to mention the sour smell of scandal that follows the Argentines around. I've lost almost all interest in the team.

Back to the Euros:

I hate France for what they did to Spain in 2006 and how they cheated in order to get into WC 2010, taking the spot away from Ireland and then creating a big, messy scandal to boot, making their appearance there totally useless. It was an insult to football fans everywhere.

I dislike Italy for all their corruptness. I feel I can't trust any of the players and I've never really liked their playing style.

The Czechs? I don't know, they don't seem like a bad team, but for me they don't have the players who can compete with the best from the other teams.

All those are my views. I've changed a bit over the years - I used to like only an attacking playing style, but now I see the value of defensive tactics for a national team. It's different in the leagues, where teams can play more attractively, but with NTs, they must win so I can see the value in playing a more direct style in order to get the result.

May the best and most deserving team win! Let's hope for no bad referee decisions that decide games, no cheating like hand balls, and no dirty tactics!

Why thank you, darling. :)
Your icon makes me wonder something too - shouldn't Mouche be getting call-ups to the NT? I don't get it...

Btw, will you be watching the Argentina-Brazil friendly today? I plan to, but later, because it's on at the same time as the Germany/Portugal Euro game which I don't want to miss. While it's supposed to be a friendly, I know it won't be. ;)

The only team I care about is england and as mostly they will play like shit *cries*
Denmark is my second team *hugs them* 'We are red, we are white, we are danish dynamite!'

Germans and attractive? Somehow it is NOTHING fore me! I just hope they will lose every match! I have seen so many people with the fucking shit Bayern shirt today and I wanted to kick all these arseholes! I hate the fans and the team!

I hate all the teams from eastern Europe. Their style is ugly!

Okay I stop.....

ps. I hope Argentina and Brazil will kill each other!

Maybe England will do well! It could always happen. :)

Denmark was amazing! :)

I still love the Germans. Why are people wearing the stupid Bayern shirt and not the NT??? I hope you said something. XD

LOL @ Argentina and Brazil. I feel compelled to start watching but I may have to turn it off. Ecuador vs Colombia tomorrow! *trembles*

While I am wearing one of my Oranje t-shirts today, I don't really give a flying f*** about the tournament. I am just not in the mood for anything football right now. Last season has taken its toll on me. *lesigh* Too much drama. I am taking a real break from football right now, and I don't really feel as though I was missing out on anything. But that's just me.

However, I seriously dislike Germany; I hate most - no, pretty much all - players when they're playing for their clubs, so why should I cheer for them now that they're wearing the German shirt? And I quite possibly cannot support anything that has "DFB" on it. :-P Also, Portugal may go to hell. Especially CrisRon who, imo, is probably the most overrated player to walk the earth. *snorts*

I can understand not wanting to be around football for awhile. The same thing has happened to me in the past. You need time away from it to get over the stress. :(

Practically NONE of my German friends like Germany! Why is that? I'm Canadian and I love them! Funny, I am wearing a Spain shirt atm. I have a German one, and a Portugal one. LOL. I guess I wanted to be 'neutral' today. :)

I agree about CR7. I cannot stand him, but I love the country he is from and the NT doesn't bother me, except they usually play like crap and they should be a lot better. :/

I think the utter dislike (I am no fan either of Germany) has to do with their trackrecord of the past. If you do dislike the Dutch about their foul play of two tournaments, Germany is known for decades of foul play with schwalbes and what more. I personally find it a team with drama queens, but hey, that's me!

I like the Germany team of the WC 2006 and since then. I know nothing about the teams of the past. And if any teams that I like now ever develop a style that I hate, i.e. dirty play, then I sure won't be liking them anymore!

Btw, I thought Denmark was wonderful today. Almost perfect, I'd say! They've risen up to #4 on my list for now. :)

You know, over at facebook someone said: Legoland vs Egoland 1-0 ;c)

I thought that would give you the chuckles.

(My son loves them and even bought their jersey, which irritates me no end. He better not come over today to watch the game.)

Tell him to join us, my kids saw their first euromatch ever and were cheering: the orange team has to win, the orange team has to win ;c) But the Danish goal was such a beauty! Oh and I informally put down a 2-0 win for Denmark. Not that I dislike our national team, but jeez, Denmark can be full of surprises.

But hey, just give the Dutch a chance. It seems like a different team together and hopefully those who played two years ago have learnt from the criticism they did get about their foul play.

Today the Dutch were good, except for their finishing. But Denmark was amazing! I thought it was an incredibly polished and mature performance, almost perfect national football.

LOL @ your kids! I actually like the Oranje kits a lot, they are one of the best kits out there. I'm sure they'll do better in their next games. It's going to be very interesting.

And yes, come to think of it, I haven't seen any dirty play so far from anyone. :)

I don't know them all that well, so I might change my mind again.

Stick with the Irish - I need one friend on here joining me in supporting them! I have the replica shirt and will be wearing it with pride tomorrow, and two cans of Murphy's in the fridge ready *x*

You bet I'm supporting the Irish! As a Spurs fan I loved Robbie Keane when he was with them. There are other players I like as well. I wish I had a shirt. I don't even have a scarf, but I can wear something green while I'm watching. ;)

"The familiarity of players is very important to me."
Me too. It helps me "connect," in a way, when I "know" some of the players.

I'm about to do a post about this in my LJ and it would be silly to repeat it all here so I'm just going to focus on the bits that apply to your post! ;)

My opinion is very much influenced by unsportsmanlike behaviour too, so there's no way I can like teams like the Netherlands, France and Italy. No way at all. The bad thing is that they don't seem to be doing much to make me change my mind, either. *sigh* Though it has to be said that most of the idiots have been cleared out of the French NT after the World Cup disaster.

Wow! I'm sorry to be so late with this reply, and also to check out your post! Going to do it now. :)))
